On March 23rd, University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) student Alex Sless won the Bronze medal in the Men’s Epee fencing event at the 2019 NCAA Fencing Championships in Cleveland, OH. Alex competed against top epee fencers representing top American colleges, Penn State, Harvard, Duke, Stanford, Columbia, Notre Dame, Ohio State and many more. In the quarterfinal Alex lost 13:15 to Oliver Shindler (Ohio State) who ended up winning the event. This is the best performance from a San Antonio native representing San Antonio College at NCAA Fencing Championships.
In his youth age, Alex was a member and trained fencing with OLYMPIAN FENCING CLUB in San Antonio under the supervision of Head Coach Velizar Iliev (US Olympian and tree-time World Champion). During this time period, Alex brought home to OLYMPIAN FENCING CLUB and San Antonio numerous National and Regional medals and made OLYMPIAN FENCING CLUB and San Antonio very proud. He graduated Clark High School in 2015 and received a fencing scholarship from University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in our City of San Antonio. Now, at the supervision of UIW’s Head Coach John Moreau (US Olympian), Alex finished in 8th place at the 2018 NCAA Fencing Championships and now brought home to UIW 3rd place trophy from 2019 NCAA Fencing Championships. Alex will be graduating this Spring from UIW with master’s degree in business.
